Placed on English Street from the position of pubs still standing there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway

Mary Nelson occupied it as the Joiners Arms in 1814, though Daniel Wilson owned it. In 1847 the publican, Mr Little, moved to new premises on Scotch Street, took the Joiners Arms name with him and renamed that house instead (that Scotch Street building has its own entry in this archive) -- so 78 English Street carried on trading under other names, appearing in the 1858 directory as the Commercial Hotel and Liverpool Arms.

It kept the Liverpool Arms name into the twentieth century: Mrs Lancaster was publican in the 1891 census, Robert Hind in 1901, and the Evening News and Star recorded its closure in October 1916. Not the Joiners Arms on Church Street in Caldewgate, which is a different house again.
