Where exactly

Roughly where Boots is now. The pin is approximate.

An inn from about 1700, first as the George, then as the George and Dragon from 1779, and as the String of Horses from 1807. Its address is given as both 51 and 74 English Street. Edward Wilson had it in 1809, and in 1811 David Hetherington's carrier left it for Newcastle. John Carruthers had it in 1821, Parson and White's directory of 1829 names John Cumming, and Abraham Barker had it in 1861. Not to be confused with the String of Horses still open at Faugh.

Advertisements to let it in 1858 give its location as the Corn Market, and later as the Market Place, which is the same ground under changing names. J. Philips signed the innkeepers' memorial of February 1867 for the String of Horses. It appears in the directories up to 1869 and the building became a shop. The site has since been rebuilt, and Boots stands roughly where it was.
