Much the older of English Street's two Angels, and one of the oldest houses in the city: Walter Brand stayed at the Angel in 1634. John Mulcaster had it in 1802, John Mitchinson in 1821, when the address was written down as Castle Street rather than English Street. It burnt down in 1841 and was rebuilt -- the fire was arson: the landlady, a Mrs Christopherson, pleaded guilty to setting it in the hope of claiming the insurance and emigrating to America, and was transported to Australia instead.

O. Bewsher and Son next door, which is the old Angel. It closed in 1916 with the rest. The study of English Street's pubs files it as "Angel Inn and London Tavern", treating the two names as one house, which is a third possible location for the London Tavern this archive files on London Road.
