Carlisle, 1916. You've just come to work at the Gretna munitions factory, and the government is about to take over the pubs. The people are made up. The pubs, the streets, the rules and the dates are real.

What's real in this?

Archie and you are invented. Everything else comes from this site's own pages: the pubs and where they stood, the day the Gretna Tavern opened and who spoke, the ban on buying rounds, the dry Saturdays, the form for a bottle of whisky, the Board's man arguing with the Irvings at Wreay, the King at the Gretna Tavern door, and the convictions for drunkenness year by year.

The little map lights every pub on this site with a position and dates that put it in the middle of Carlisle that year. Where the records only give a year, that's what the map uses.

The full story is on When the government ran the pubs, and every pub you drink in has its own page.
