Placed on English Street from the position of pubs still standing there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway

First mentioned in 1713 and in the directories up to 1884, near the head of Kings Arms Lane, which still carries the name. It traded as the Unicorn until 1843, the Golden Pheasant until 1853, and the Crown until about 1861 before finally settling on the Kings Arms name it kept to the end -- an 1841 sale ad for the "long established" Old Unicorn falls right in that first phase. Thomas Hardesty kept it in the 1790s, Thomas James in 1803, Ralph Holmes from 1811. In 1891 the Chief Constable opposed the renewal of its licence, which is usually the beginning of the end for a pub and appears to have been so here.
