Your ticks
The passport is stored on your device and nowhere else. There's no account, nothing is uploaded, and nothing is shared unless you press share. Clearing your browser data will clear your ticks.
Counting visits
The site uses Google Analytics to count how many people visit and which pages they read, so I can see what's useful and what isn't. It sets a few cookies to tell a new visitor from a returning one, and it reports things like the page you're on, roughly which town you're in, and what kind of device and browser you're using. It doesn't tell me who you are, and nothing you tick in the passport or type into the contact form goes to Google.
If you'd rather not be counted, you can block it with your browser's privacy settings or an ad blocker, or with Google's own opt-out add-on. The site works exactly the same either way.
Where the data comes from
The pub list started from OpenStreetMap and has been checked by hand since, against the council's licensing register, CAMRA's records, Historic England's listings, old trade directories, census returns, local newspapers and the State Management Scheme's own papers. Every history on the site lists its sources at the foot of the page, and anything that isn't settled is said to be unsettled, on the page and on the open questions list.
Opening hours are checked by hand too, and each pub page says when they were last checked. They do go out of date, so ring ahead if it matters.
Support it
This is free, has no ads, and nobody pays to be listed or ranked higher. If it saved you a wasted walk:
