The White Lion was trading before 1777. Parson and White's directory of 1829 names James Reed as its keeper, and it was a carriers' inn that year: James Hewitt ran daily to Brampton from it, Walter Brown to Longtown and John Charlton to Newcastle, and the street list has a White Lion Lane off English Street.

In 1849 the site was cleared for the Carlisle City and District Bank, and the new street cut between English Street and Lowther Street to serve it was named Bank Street after the bank that caused it. That was the end of the White Lion on English Street. Its keeper, Jane Reed, who had it in 1847, took the name with her to new premises at 35 Lowther Street, where the Post Office directory of 1858 lists her White Lion. It is there in 1873 under Mrs E. Hetherington, at 68 Lowther Street, very probably the same house renumbered, and one record carries it to 1874.
