Placed on English Street from the position of pubs still standing there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway

The proprietor moved out to new premises on Lowther Street in 1849 to make way for a bank, but the White Lion kept appearing in the directories until 1873, so something went on trading here for another twenty years after the move. The site itself was demolished in 1849 to make way for the Carlisle City and District Bank, and the new street cut between English Street and Lowther Street to serve it was named Bank Street after the bank that caused it.
