Thomas Scarrow kept the White Hart from at least 1805 to 1814, and it is his innkeeper's licence of 1812, which names no premises beyond English Street, that set a family historian off on the search that produced most of the entries around this one. The Scarrows were yeoman farmers from Scarrowhill near Cumwhitton who came north through Wetheral into the city. His son of the same name became a Carlisle councillor and Alderman, and in 1847 opened the Lancaster and Caledonian Hotel on Botchergate, which trades today as the Caledonian.

Father and son, two pubs, and an archive that exists because of their paperwork. Launcelot Brown had it through the 1820s, William Bowman to 1833. Isabella Nicholson ran it from 1851, bought the Royal Hotel next door in 1855 and joined the two into a twenty-bedroom hotel. Both came down in 1874 when the south side of Bank Street was built. The materials of the White Hart sold that June for forty pounds.
