Three sources put this pub in three different places. The scheme's 1920 roll has it on London Road, which is why the entry sits here. uk gives 2 Alexander Street and Images of Cumbria says the London Tavern on Alexander Street opened in 1916 and closed in 2007; Alexander Street is off Botchergate, not London Road. And a study of English Street's pubs files "Angel Inn and London Tavern" together as one house at 77 English Street.

That is three streets for one name. Either the name moved twice, or there were three of them, or somebody wrote a street down wrong a century ago and everyone has copied it since. Filed on the 1920 roll's street until it can be settled. Whichever address is right, its origin is on record: the builder David Thomson put up the South End Conservative Club at his own expense, and it was later converted into this pub, opening in November 1916. It was sold to Greenall Whitley on 2 April 1973.
