Lost pub ยท Rickergate

The Wheat Sheaf Inn

about 1785 to 1916

Built
On the 1867 OS map; possibly late 18th century
Gone
Closed by the Board, 11 October 1916
There now
Carlisle Magistrates' Court, formerly the police headquarters
Where exactly
Under the Magistrates' Court, built as the police headquarters

Little is known about it and no period photographs have been found. There's an irony in what replaced it: the pub closed by the state in 1916 now lies under the building that became the Magistrates' Court after the 2005 flood drove it out of the old police headquarters.
