Placed from the Ordnance Survey grid reference, NY3943855942, in Historic England's gazetteer of the scheme's premises. The building has since been demolished.

A John Street beerhouse from about 1845, with three names: the Weavers Arms until 1863, the Sportsman's Arms from 1864, and the Bricklayers Arms from about 1880. A Sportsman's Arms, John Street, appears in the local directories for 1869 and 1870. It was a free house rather than a brewery's tied pub. The 1894 record gives the owner as Thomas Lister, who was a builder, which is probably where the last name came from. The Cumberland News column of 2 August 1991 says it was not as old as some in the series, first mentioned in the city directories in 1880 by the Lanes Library records and last appearing in 1914.

J. H. Wilson took the licence in May 1901, as 'late proprietor of the Old Anchor Inn, which has been demolished by the Caldewgate improvement'; see the Old Anchor. In the early years of the century he held it with the Wheatsheaf Inn on Rickergate. A photograph of it in 1902 survives in Carlisle: The Archive Photographs.

It was one of the pubs shut in the first months of the scheme, in October 1916; the Cumberland News of 4 November 1916 lists it among the Carlisle licensed houses the Board had closed by 1 November, and the 1991 column calls it probably a victim of the First World War 'purge'. The building outlived the pub by eighty-five years and was demolished in 2001.
