One of the pubs shut in the first months of the scheme, in October 1916. The 1894 record gives the owner as Thomas Lister, who was a builder, which is probably where the name came from. The Carlisle Encyclopaedia suggests it was the Sportsman's Arms Inn before 1880 and the Weavers Arms before that, and a separate primary-source citation -- a Sportsman's Arms, John Street, in the local directories for 1869 and 1870 -- sits neatly inside that window, firming the middle stage of the chain up from a guess to a dated fact, even if the full run (Weavers Arms 1845-63, Sportsman's Arms by 1869-70, Bricklayers Arms from 1880) still isn't documented as one continuous story in a single source. The building outlived the pub by eighty-five years and was demolished in 2001. A photograph of it in 1902 survives in Carlisle: The Archive Photographs.
