There were at least four Golden Fleeces around Carlisle, and this is the one on Corporation Road, near Solway Street -- not the St Nicholas Street house that the South End Constitutional Club was built over, nor the shorter-lived ones at Willowholme and Harraby. It is number twenty-four on the scheme's 1920 roll, in local directories from 1861 to 1927. By 1895 the licence was held by Jane Bell, widow of William Mark Bell, a nail manufacturer, which was a common enough way for a woman to end up running a pub in that period.
It closed when the new Malt Shovel opened across the way -- the Malt Shovel on Rickergate, the only Rickergate pub building still standing today, which Redfern rebuilt and reopened in August 1928; the Fleece's own last directory year, 1927, sits right alongside that rebuild.
