The building survives on Rickergate as Adriano's. The only Rickergate pub building left

The one that got away. Rickergate had at least fourteen pubs at the end of the nineteenth century and this is the only building left standing from any of them. The original was an eighteenth-century inn, and Robert Burns stayed the night of 31 May 1787 in it. It was the only pub the city corporation owned, and when Carlisle sold it to the Workington Brewery in 1894 for £2,000 the money went towards founding the public library at Tullie House, so a pub paid for the museum that now holds the city's records.

The state took it on 24 July 1916, pulled the old building down in 1927, removing the tenant Mrs Matthews for the rebuilding, and had Redfern's replacement open by August 1928, when she was reinstated. It went to Greenall Whitley on 3 April 1973 and has since been the Brew House; a nightclub, Hoppers, was added to it by February 1998. It has since been Robbies and then, from a May 2004 relaunch under chef/owner Franco Bertoletti, Ristoranto Adriano -- Adriano's, which is still there.

The restaurant shut in September 2022 after seventeen years, blaming energy costs and staffing, and reopened under a new team in 2024. It flooded in 2015 along with everything else down there.
