Placed on Rickergate from the position of pubs still standing there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway

Traceable from at least 1801, when Mary Carrick was the innkeeper, through a full century of named licensees: Lawrence Benson by 1804, Andrew Mallinson by 1861, Thomas Taylor by 1891, John Thompson by 1901. Its history wasn't entirely smooth — an 1839 notice announced its conversion to shops, only for a second notice a month later to advertise it to let as a pub again, suggesting the closure didn't stick. In 1894 the police formally objected to the renewal of its licence at the Brewster Sessions, and it's last recorded in the trade directories around 1902-03.
