Far north of the Civic Centre site, opposite Corporation Road

A substantial brick-built two-storey end-terrace at the far north of what is now the Civic Centre site, opposite Corporation Road, probably put up between 1842 and 1844. The state took it on 23 August 1916 and closed it in April 1919, one of seven Rickergate pubs the Board shut between 1916 and 1919. What the building did between 1919 and its demolition around 1961 is not recorded. uk places a Drove Inn on Stanwix Bank and dates it 1917; the Rickergate survey is specific about the site and the date, so the street and year here stand.

The Carlisle Encyclopaedia's own separate entry for this pub gives a different closing date again: April 1917, sourced to local directories and to S. Davidson's Carlisle Breweries and Public Houses. " Two respectable sources now disagree on the year by two years; both are recorded here rather than one being silently preferred.
