Placed on Rickergate from the position of pubs still standing there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway

Trading from before 1789. Mrs Busby was innkeeper in 1828, the pub itself to let and Mrs Owen the owner; Margaret Harris, born at Longtown, held it in the 1861 census. A separately-held pub database gives two earlier names for the site, the Three Ships and the Maltman, both from 1820 to 1822, before it settled on the plain Ship. This page's own citations imply it traded in the directories to 1914, while the pub database gives a considerably earlier closure, 1906 -- not reconciled here. A different pub from the Ship Inn on Irishgate Brow, also once known as the Old Ship.
