Placed at the Scotch Street end of Old Turk's Head Lane, using Carlisle's 1794 town plan fitted to the modern map. The pin is approximate.

On Scotch Street from about 1800, and demolished in 1829 by one record; another has an Old Turks Head on Scotch Street until 1834. A separate pub from the City Vaults on Fisher Street, which traded as the Turks Head from before 1783. The plan of the city printed in Hutchinson's History of Cumberland in 1794 already names an Old Turk's Head Lane off the east side of Scotch Street, facing the Market Place, which points to a Turk's Head on the street, and one already called old, before the first directory date.

Open question

A date we can't pin down

Carlisle's 1794 town plan already names an Old Turk's Head Lane off Scotch Street. Was the Old Turks Head trading well before 1800, and was there an older Turk's Head on the street before it?

If you know the answer, or where it might be found (an old photograph, a family story, a document), tell us and it goes into the story above.
