The older of the two Duke's Head pubs traced in this archive, dated by a striking eighteenth-century citation: Baron Clarke's Notebook of 1746, p36, records "Adam Elliot at ye Duke's Head in Carlisle" -- the same year, and the same source, as the Crown and Mitre's own Jacobite-era citation, making the two of them the earliest firmly-dated pub references in this archive after the solitary 1592 Dragon Inn Coronet mention.

The Universal Directory of 1793-98, p631, records it kept by a Sowerby, and the Carlisle Journal of 27 June 1801 names Mrs Isabella Sowerby as innkeeper. The 1821 New Guide to Carlisle, p76, and the 1829 directory both name Margaret Snowden. In local directories to 1848.
