Named for G. Ismay, a Scotch Street wine and spirit merchant, and one of the many Carlisle pubs the Central Control Board renamed when it took over in 1916 -- the Evening News and Star recorded the change, to the Market Tavern, on 2 November 1916. A separate Ismay's Vaults traded on Botchergate; nothing here says whether the two were connected. A second Carlisle pub, Nanson's Vaults on West Tower Street, is also recorded as renamed the Market Tavern on the very same date, 2 November 1916 -- and the site's own pub database disagrees with both accounts again, tying Nanson's Vaults to a Tower Tavern rename instead and giving this pub's own closure as 1890, not a 1916 rename. Three sources, three different stories; none preferred here.
