The building is still open and still licensed, so whether this counts as a lost pub is a fair question. It is here because what was lost was the pub. This entry used to give the Angel's own closing date as 2023, but that read the evidence wrong: CAMRA's own text says only that Bordo Lounge opened next to the site of the former Angel Pub in October 2023 -- "former" meaning the Angel was already gone by then, not that it closed that year.

Bordo Lounge itself opened in October 2023 in the old Topshop unit next door, not in the Angel's own premises -- the press coverage of its opening is clear about that, and this entry used to wrongly imply otherwise too. Dave, who remembers Carlisle city centre from decades back, places the Angel's closure in the 1970s -- no documentary source has been found to pin the year down more precisely than that, but it is recorded here as the best evidence going.

What is in the Angel's own premises now has not been established. Where a pub has only changed its name, as the Albion did when it became the Border Rambler, this archive says so and leaves it at that. Where it has stopped being a pub, it goes in properly. English Street has now lost two Angels: this one, and the Angel Inn the state closed in 1916.
