On Botchergate from 1804, and sometimes written the Hound and Hares. The lane beside it was the Hare and Hounds Lane, home in later years to a well-known and not very reputable character called Nanny Nap. A 1922 reminiscence in the Cumberland News recalls 'Joe' Richardson's good name as landlord of the Hare and Hounds and says his son Tom James, a chemist, later altered and heightened the premises, then occupied by a Mr J. P. Dowell. Thomas Doughall kept it in 1884, at 28 Botchergate.

The State Management Scheme acquired it in October 1916; the Cumberland News of 21 October lists it among the six fully licensed houses the Board took over that week. It is on the scheme's 1920 roll of Carlisle pubs, but it did not last much longer: the Carlisle Journal of 22 July 1921 reported it temporarily closed, and the city's own minutes for 1921-22 (p157) record it permanently closed on 25 September 1921.
