Traded as the West Tower Street Spirit Vaults from at least 1861 into the early 1910s before being renamed the Tower Tavern; the city's licensing committee recorded the withdrawal of its licence in 1918-19. A separately-held Carlisle pub database independently gives 1834 as the building's origin and 1919 as its close, consistent with the Encyclopaedia's own record. A Carlisle Encyclopaedia citation also has Nanson's Vaults, on this same street, renamed the Market Tavern on 2 November 1916 -- the same date given for a similar rename at Ismay's Vaults on Scotch Street. Whether this pub, that one, both or neither actually became the Market Tavern is not resolved here.
