In the directories from 1844 at 13 London Road, then from the 1860s at 142 Botchergate, as this stretch of road was renumbered and renamed around it. A beerhouse by 1830, trading as a full pub from 1837, and a Carlisle New Brewery house before the scheme acquired it in August 1916. A 1931 photograph survives showing the pub with its landlady, Mrs Ruell. It closed in 1935, the same year the new, Redfern-built Earl Grey opened directly across the road -- a straightforward swap, one pub for another, in the same year.

There's an odd coincidence worth flagging rather than resolving: the Earl Grey's own predecessor, on the same street, also dates its own start as a pub to 1837 and was also a scheme acquisition. Whether that's simply two neighbouring Botchergate beerhouses that happened to turn into full pubs in the same year of the 1830s licensing wave, or something closer, isn't settled here.
