Traded from at least 1822 as the Founders Arms, becoming the Moulders Arms by 1828, and the Albert Family and Commercial Hotel by 1855. A members' club calling itself simply "the Albert" was founded here in October 1841 and ran for over fifty years, closing in 1893 -- the same year the hotel became the Conservative Club -- so trade and club life plausibly overlapped at this address for much of its run, though nothing found here confirms it was the same premises rather than a separate Botchergate institution of the same name.

It shut as a hotel in 1892 and reopened the following August as the Botchergate Conservative Club; the club managed ten years before the Carlisle Journal reported, in July 1903, that it had been struck off the register for drunkenness on the premises. Quite what became of the building after that is not recorded here. A separate Botchergate headword in the encyclopaedia, The Albert Tavern, covers what looks very likely to be this same pub under a slightly different name and closing date -- the two have not been fully reconciled and are kept as separate entries pending that.
