History
A budget hotel with 66 rooms and a bar that's open to anyone, near the university and both stations. The bar is the point: it pitches itself as the cheapest in the area, open late, with a coffee shop, billiard tables and karaoke. Where the Pinegrove's bar is genteel, this is wet-led and aimed squarely at the budget end.
There's no heritage to report. The run of street numbers on London Road suggests former townhouses knocked together, but there's no listing, no build date and no State Management link in any source. The history text on some booking sites is recycled Carlisle boilerplate about Romans, William Rufus and Mary Queen of Scots, and has nothing to do with this building.
Roadhouse is an apt modern name rather than a historic one: the old term for a wayside inn on a main road, which is exactly what it is.
