A separately-held Carlisle pub database gives a fuller life for this address than the directories alone: the Prince of Wales Feathers from about 1823, renamed the Robert Burns by 1825 or 1834 (the two accounts differ on exactly when), then the Shakespeare from 1837, and finally the Lowther Arms from 1858 into the twentieth century -- a Maryport Brewery house throughout. Burns had himself stayed at the Malt Shovel on Rickergate in 1787, so the name was not idle in this city.
This reading sits awkwardly against the site's own separately-held Lowther Arms entry, at 12 St Cuthbert's Lane rather than this address's 5 -- close enough on the same short lane to be the same building loosely numbered, or genuinely two different houses that both wore the Shakespeare and Lowther Arms names at different times; not resolved here.
