In the same small St Cuthbert's Lane cluster as the Duke of Wellington and the Drove Inn history already on this site for that street, and a pub the Duke of Wellington's own entry mentions in passing without, until now, having one of its own. A Carlisle Old Brewery house, in local directories from 1844 to 1913 or 1914, and known under at least two other signs along the way: possibly the Woolpack around 1865 and the Drove around 1873.
John Reid is named as innkeeper in the 1847 directory, Thomas Long, 42 and born in Carlisle, in the 1861 census, and John Carrick, 40 and born at Houghton, in 1891. It was rebuilt in 1898 and later passed into the Jennings estate.
