A Maryport Brewery house, closed on 21 December 1915 per the city's own minutes -- one of the earliest closures ahead of the state takeover the following year. An 1841 sale notice describes it as long known by the Lowther Arms sign, and the site's own pub database suggests it may have traded as the Shakespeare before 1857. Not to be confused with two other Lowther Arms this archive holds: the district pub at Beaumont, formerly the Lowther Castle Arms, and the Sportsman Inn on Heads Lane, which also wore the Lowther Arms name for a stretch on its way through half a dozen signs to its present one.
A separately-held pub database traces a fuller naming chain for a nearby St Cuthbert's Lane address, 5 rather than this entry's 12 -- Prince of Wales Feathers, then Robert Burns, then Shakespeare, then Lowther Arms -- which may describe this same building loosely numbered, or a second, distinct one a few doors along; see the Robert Burns Inn entry for the same open question.
