The Beaumont pub, number 99 on the scheme's 1920 roll, and another of the Board's early closures: the directories run from before 1829 to 1917. Its earlier name is the good detail, and it points straight at the landowner. It was the Lowther Castle Arms before it shortened itself, the Lowthers being the Lonsdale family whose name is on half of Cumberland, including the street in Carlisle where the first state pub opened in 1916. Beaumont sits on Hadrian's Wall above the Solway plain, and the pub is long gone from it.
