A predecessor name for the building that became the Bowling Green Hotel -- a Spring Garden House recorded as early as 1713, renamed the Shakespeare Tavern by 1803, and rebuilt into the Bowling Green in 1885, its own fuller story told on that entry. This is a genuinely different pub from the other Shakespeare Tavern this archive holds, on St Cuthbert's Lane -- part of the Robert Burns Inn's own naming chain (Prince of Wales Feathers, Robert Burns, Shakespeare, Lowther Arms) -- which the scheme's 1920 roll and a separately-held pub database both keep separate from this Lowther Street building.

Two differently-sited Carlisle pubs wore the Shakespeare name at different times; this entry exists mainly to flag that distinction for anyone who finds one citation and assumes the other.
