Where exactly

Irishgate Brow ran down from the castle towards the Caldew and has gone; the pin marks roughly where it was, not the building. The position is approximate.

Traded as the Ship from before 1784, becoming the Victoria Steam Packet around 1840 and finally the Royal Victoria from about 1854. It is gone from the directories by 1873 and was demolished the following year. Other records date the Royal Victoria from 1844 and carry it on to 1876 or 1877. Isaac Bell kept it as the Royal Victoria Steam Packet Inn in 1847, when he was among the publicans who took their bills to the party agents after the election. The brow's other Ship, the Old Ship, was a separate house further down, which lost its licence in 1868.
