- Irishgate Brow ran down from the castle towards the Caldew and has gone; the pin marks roughly where it was, not the building. The position is approximate.
On Irishgate Brow, where William Cranmer kept it in Pigot's directory of 1828-29 and Parson and White's of 1829. It was advertised to let as a public house in April 1846, and drops out of the directories after 1848. Its end came with the railway. In February 1847 the directors of the Caledonian Railway sold off the building materials of the houses they were clearing at Ritson's Lane and Irish Dam Side, and lot 11 was 'that public-house known by the sign of The Britannia', next to Robert Bell's beer-shop and backing onto Ritson's Lane. The Black Lion a few yards off was left standing. Irishgate Brow ran down towards the Irish Gate, at the west end of the city walls. No relation to Club Britannia on Lowther Street.
