The Boardroom

State Management pub

One of the pubs run by the Carlisle and District State Management Scheme, listed by The State Management Story project.

Traditional boozer next to the Cathedral, and one of the cheaper pints in town. Quiet corners, an old film usually on the big telly. Closed Sundays.

History

Opened Deeds from 1651; present building late 18th century

The deeds are said to run back to 1651, though the building you're standing in is late eighteenth century with Victorian and twentieth-century alterations. It's Grade II listed. Under the State Management Scheme it was renamed the Board Inn — and it sits directly opposite what was the Scheme's own head office, now Bookcase. A 1920s photograph in the Carlisle Museum collection shows the ground floor before the 1960s and 1980s work.
