On Church Street in Caldewgate from before 1809, known simply as the Queens Head before later picking up the "Old" of this archive's headword. A separate, much longer-lived Old Queens Head stood across the city centre on St Albans Row. The Carlisle Encyclopaedia itself flags a genuine muddle here: it names three successive Church Street innkeepers between 1804 and 1809 (Mrs Armstrong, Miss Ann Johnstone, Mrs Cowen) for this pub, but also records a licence withdrawn from "Church St premises" in the city's 1918-19 minutes -- four years after this entry's own 1894 last-directory-year.
Whether that later closure belongs to this pub trading on past its directory listing, a clerical mix-up with the separate Queens Head Inn this archive also holds nearby, or a third Caldewgate pub of the same name entirely, isn't settled. A fourth, Bridge Street "Queens Head Inn" -- Honor Studholme, victualler, in the 1861 census -- is attested nowhere else and may be a further separate house again.
