History
Opened Late 1980s
Built and opened in 1985 by Daniel Thwaites. The name is the reason it's worth reading about. It was built where farmers used to cross the bridge driving their goslings to market. CAMRA put it slightly differently, saying it is named for a nearby stream the goslings used. Either way it records a real bit of landscape: a crossing where geese were walked to be sold.
Be straight about the building, though. Despite the 'Inn' and the marketing about being steeped in history, it's a large late-1980s hotel and pub, now with a Premier Inn attached. The history in the blurb belongs to the area, not to this building. The area claim does hold up: Hadrian's Wall runs close by, which puts it in the same Roman country as the Cumbria Park and Edenside, just as a modern pub near the line rather than on a documented site.
Locals call it the Goz.
