The Cumbria Park stands on the remains of the largest Roman fort on the whole of Hadrian's Wall. Uxelodunum at Stanwix was the base of the Ala Petriana, a crack thousand-strong cavalry regiment, and the hotel built on it names its evening bar Hadrian's Bar. When the Crown & Thistle is described as close to the line of the Wall, this is what that means. The garrison's bathhouse, incidentally, lies under the outfield at Edenside.

What stands on top is a family-run hotel made from a run of old Victorian terraces. One trade listing gives a build year of 1962, which most likely refers to when they were combined and converted into a hotel rather than when the houses went up, so it is Victorian terraces, converted last century, with no single hard date. It was extensively refurbished around 2020.

It has around fifty rooms, wedding and event facilities, and a lounge bar with local bottled ales and spirits: the friendly-independent tier of hotel bar, below the grand ones in town.
