One pub that changed its sign twice before it closed. It appears as the Dog Inn in 1874, the same year a Pointer Dog is recorded that may well be the same house under a fuller version of the name. By 1877 it was marked on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map as the Spaniel Dog Inn, and it had become the Kings Arms Inn by 1879, the name it closed under in 1917. Thomas Jackson held the licence until it passed to Alexander McGuinness in 1879; Margaret Pearson was landlady by 1901, and William Rayson took over from her in 1907.

It closed for good in January 1917, when a Carlisle Journal report records the decision to shut it and convert it to a beerhouse. This is a separate pub from the long-running Kings Arms Inn this archive already holds on English Street, near Kings Arms Lane, which is a different, much older house at a different address. A separate pub, ten miles northeast near Hethersgill, traded under the same Pointer Dog name at an overlapping date -- Howards End, Bolton Fell End -- a different house entirely, not to be confused with this one.
