Started out as the Lancer Public House (also the Lancer Inn) on Gallows Hill, Harraby, in the local directories until 1848 -- a Carlisle Journal notice of January 1844 offered the Lancer Inn to let. By 1865 it had stopped trading as a pub and become a private house, Hill Top Cottage; by 1898 it was Harraby Lodge, bought that August by a Mr Boustead for £800; the 1918 electoral register still gives it as Harraby Lodge.
It took the name Thorncliffe by 1950, and as of 2024 is known as Carrick Lodge. A separate naming chain -- the Apple Tree, later the Lancer, on Harraby Hill -- covers the same general area and shares the Lancer name at an overlapping date; it has not been confirmed whether these are the same building or two distinct pubs, and they are kept as separate entries pending that.
