Where exactly

The Grade II listed building stands at the Grey Street junction on London Road, closed

Named after a firm that had already gone. Cowans, Sheldon & Co made cranes on London Road from the 1840s and their works stood opposite until demolition in 1989; the pub took the Cranemakers name in 1990, the year after. The building itself started as a house in the 1830s or 1840s, shows on the 1842 map of the city, and was later the Carleton private hotel before it was first licensed in 1981 as the Theakston.

It shut on 8 February 2025 when the licensee retired, and CAMRA listed it closed long term six days after that. It was one of the last pubs anywhere serving Younger's Scotch Bitter. Grade II listed, so the building should outlast the closure.
