On Harraby Hill, first recorded as the Golden Fleece from 1808, renamed the Bald Faced Stag by 1811 and then the Apple Tree, under which sign it was still trading in 1814 -- an 1829 advert apparently calls the house by that name too. It later became known as the Lancer, and traded on into the 1840s. A separate, similarly-named naming chain -- Gallows Hill's Lancer Public House, which became Hill Top Cottage, then Harraby Lodge, then Thorncliffe -- sits in the same general Harraby area and has not been confirmed as the same building or a different one; kept as a separate entry pending that. Not to be confused with the Apple Tree on Lowther Street, a Redfern-designed pub still trading.
