Robert Brown ran it in 1847. A murder-suicide happened here on 12 April 1861: William Horsley killed Jane Davidson before killing himself, a case the Carlisle Journal covered on 3 May 1861. A separate 1871 inquest report mentions a man lost in "Slater's fire" on this street, though whether that fire touched this pub isn't established. The site's own pub database gives the building's later name as the Queen Victoria, closing that identity out at around 1862 -- close to, but not confidently pinned to, the murder the year before. This is a different pub from the better-documented Pack Horse Inn on English Street, and from a third Pack Horse on Newtown Road/Colin Street.
