On Fisher Street. The exact spot isn't known, so the pin marks the street, not the building.

On Fisher Street, and named for the market cross of 1682 that still stands a short walk away. It appears in the local directories for 1847 and 1848, and one record has it trading from 1844 to 1851. A short life, which usually means a beerhouse rather than a full public house. The Cumberland News of 12 July 1991 mentions a Star Inn at 30 Fisher Street from about 1841 to 1869 which for part of that time seems to have changed its name to the Carlisle Cross and then reverted to the Star, which would make the two names one house.

An unsolved mystery

The Carlisle Cross Inn (1844-51) and the Star, the renamed Saddle Inn (from 1844), are both given as 30 Fisher Street. The Cumberland News of 12 July 1991 suggests one house that changed to the Carlisle Cross and back to the Star. Is that right, or were there two houses or a slip in the numbering?
