Formerly the Carlisle Working Men's Club & Institute, the classic CIU working men's club, the most common club type in twentieth-century Britain and the one type Carlisle has lost. Its formation traces to 1874, with a first AGM the following spring; it was based first in West Walls, then Paradise Court, before opening its own purpose-built premises here, at number 11, on 26 January 1928. Its hundredth anniversary was marked in 1974.

Liquidators were appointed in June 2015 and the company was dissolved on 23 September 2016; as of 2023 the building was reported in the middle of building work, having stood closed as a working men's club for several years by then. It was a few doors from the RAOB club at number 20, and the two are often confused.
