At St Margaret Mary's in Upperby the hall came before the church. The parish hall on Scalegate Road was licensed on 3 December 1956, and the church followed in 1961, built to designs by James Brignell Dand of Carlisle: a modern take on an early Christian basilica in red brick, with an apse, clerestory windows, a round stained-glass window over the entrance and a brick campanile set off to one side.

The club grew in two steps, a concert room added on 1 May 1963 and a lounge opened on 27 March 1972, both inside the sixteen years after the first licence. It has since put itself on a modern footing without losing the parish. St Margaret Mary's Parish Community Centre Ltd was incorporated on 22 May 2007 as a company limited by guarantee, and is still filing; its gaming machines have been registered with the council since February 2009. It opens to the public from Thursday to Sunday, late into the night, and the function room is let for private bookings earlier in the week.

It is one of the city's two surviving Catholic clubs, with Harraby Catholic Club. The other, the Knights of St Columba on Warwick Square in the city centre, sold its premises in 2005.
