Upperby's club began as the Upperby Men's Institute, purpose-built in 1922: a two-storey detached building in brick under a pitched slate roof, in the classic working men's institute tradition. That firm date is more than most clubs here can offer, and it puts it among the interwar institutions with the Ex of 1921 and Creighton of 1927. The Ex went in June 2026, which leaves this one and Creighton.

A two-storey extension under flat roofs was completed in 1979, and the name was modernised in time, as the old gendered institute names have been quietly modernising for years. The licensing register still carries the older name behind it: the gaming notices are served by the Upperby Mens Inst Committee.

The last decade has been rocky. The club took out a full premises licence in 2016 and gave up its club certificate the following year, and a limited company, Upperby Social Club Ltd, took it on in January 2018. That company's last accounts run to January 2020, and by October 2022 Savills were marketing the freehold, 0.41 acres with parking for about thirty, at offers over £300,000, describing it as having traded under a premises licence.

It came back. A new club premises certificate was granted in April 2025, with a temporary event licence over the same weekend, and the premises licence was transferred to new hands in August 2025. The 2018 company was struck off and dissolved on 5 May 2026, but the club carries on under the new licences, with a members' lounge and bar, a snooker room, a games room, and a first-floor function room with a stage, for hire.
