Currock, Carlisle

Q Zone

โ€”

A snooker and pool hall on Currock Road with its own bar and darts too. It works as a club on paper, but a walk-in can drink at the bar without joining anything.

Address
Currock Road, Carlisle CA2 4AS

Also known as Portland Snooker Club

History

Q Zone is the old Portland Snooker Club under a new name. The Portland opened on Botchergate in 1982 and later moved out here to Currock Road, and the Cumberland News reported it up for sale in March 2011. CAMRA's record still carried the Portland name when they last surveyed it in 2015, and the food hygiene register still files Q Zone at the Portland Snooker Club, Currock Road. This is that club's next life, not a new one.

It is a WPBSA-recognised club with fifteen tables, plus darts and a proper bar. It holds a gambling notification for its machines rather than a members' club premises certificate, and however it is licensed, the bar is open to anyone who walks in, with no membership needed to get a drink. Some players sign up as members to get regular table time; that is about the tables, not the door.

Reviews describe a snooker table re-tipping service, reasonably priced drinks, and staff who will teach a first-timer the game.
