- Placed on English Damside from the position of pubs still standing near there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway
A separate, distinct pub from the still-trading Caledonian on Botchergate -- the two should not be conflated. R. Lee is named at English Damside in the 1858 directory, and the 1861 census gives Robert Lee, innkeeper, 59. Elizabeth Handy, 39 and born at Taunton, is the innkeeper of the 1891 census, and Bernard McAlindon, 59 and born in Ireland, is recorded there in 1901. The Carlisle Patriot put it up for sale on 2 October 1874 together with the West Walls Brewery, then held on a yearly tenancy by a Miss Mabel Wannop.
