A beerhouse on Backhouse Walk from 1839 to 1846, then in the directories as the New Inn from 1847 to about 1902-03. James Slee, innkeeper and bookbinder, born at Armathwaite, held it in 1861; Mary McCourt, born in Ireland, was innkeeper by 1901. The Carlisle Journal's report of the adjourned licensing sessions of March 1903 names the New Inn, Backhouse Walk, among six city houses whose licences would end after April that year, which is why it drops out of the directories then.
