The most reinvented address in Carlisle. This unit has been the Litten Tree, then Party Party from late 2008 to January 2012, then the Church, then Phoenix. It shut in January 2015, came back as Glasshouse in 2019, went dark again in 2020, and reopened as Ballers in August 2023: several lives rather than one. The Glasshouse here is not the one on Devonshire Street, which ran from 2003 to 2010 and is now the Thin White Duke.
The old identities haven't entirely gone from the paperwork: the council's gambling register still carries the Church name against this address.
The latest life began with a gutting. Kelsey Little and Ben Read picked up the keys on 12 June 2023 and gutted the place, ripping the bar out of the middle of the room and starting again, and it opened on Saturday 5 August. The idea came from a trip to Las Vegas: pool tables, air hockey, arcade machines and big screens, a photo booth and basketball hoops, with homemade pizza, burgers, rollover hot dogs and nachos. Pool on Wednesdays, karaoke on Thursdays, live music on Fridays.
It set out to be a sports bar in the full sense, showing every sport seven days a week, sponsoring local sides such as UniSun FC and Dalston Junior Black Reds, and pitching itself as a pre-match and post-match bar for Carlisle United fans. The licence runs far later than the advertised hours, to a quarter to four in the morning at weekends.
