Placed on Castle Street from the position of pubs still standing there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway

An ancient and well-accustomed inn, by its own advertiser's description when it was put up to let in November 1819. It was for sale again in September 1828, and George Smith is named as innkeeper the following month. It turns up in a further Carlisle Journal sale notice in December 1848, and is marked on Asquith's 1853 map of the city. The 1861 census gives George Scott, 72 and born at Sebergham, as publican, seven years before the building was demolished in April 1868.
